Who is Josh Williams?

I live with my parents. I am in debt. I am becoming a millionaire.

Who cares? Maybe you want to know more about what I’ve done with my life up

until now. Well, you’re not going to get my life story here, but I can provide

a brief summary of what I’ve done since I left high school.

I was part of the graduating class from 2000 at Ocean Reef Senior High School.

I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and was ready to take a year off

and have a holiday from education after a long year of exams and study.

Next thing I knew I was accepted into Curtin University for a Bachelor of Arts

in Mass Communication which was basically general media studies.

I liked graphic design and wanted to make music videos.

This three year degree took me almost five years to complete.

By the time I finished I was obsessed with advertising.

Creative Advertising would have to be one of the most interesting industries

I had ever heard of, and knew I would eventually work in an advertising agency.

My love for great ideas and creative communication took over my life.

Art direction and copy writing became my life and I had so much fun

exploring this career direction.

Towards the end of my studies I supported myself by working at a web design

and online marketing company as a telemarketer. I used to support myself by

calling business owners and learning a heap about marketing and business

in the real world. I actually had a few different telemarketing jobs

and did this for more than five years.

Most people I’d see last three to six months in this type of job.

I became part of the furniture at my last telemarketing job and ended

up working directly with a sales rep sending him all over Australia.

I organized his appointments and assisted in the national expansion of

the web design company and learned a lot about business development.

I followed the dream of working in a creative role as part of an advertising

agency for years on end with no success of landing a job. I did plenty

of work experience at a heap of different agencies in Perth.

I also persisted with this desire to the point where I tried four times,

four years in a row, to get in to a specialist creative advertising

course run by the industry. I eventually got in, and this was,

in my mind, the icing on the cake for my education.

I felt like I had ‘made it’ and was fully qualified to get my

ultimate job working as a creative in an advertising agency.

But I didn’t.

Whilst acquiring my specialist creative advertising knowledge

and experience, I had been seriously developing my business skills

working for the website design company. Dealing with clients

and achieving sales budgets, managing a team of telemarketers

and being a key player in the national expansion of the website

company had molded me into a very experienced sales,

marketing and business development consultant.

I wanted to be a creative but I had become a suit.

I did eventually get a dream job in an advertising agency. Rather than

being part of the creative team, I managed to land a senior position

working in management for a small agency that had just

bought a web design business. This was a huge opportunity for me

as I had finally reached my goal of working in creative advertising,

plus I had a profit share arrangement so was virtually a partner in the business.

I worked over 60 hour weeks for this job. Blood, sweat and tears I

guess you could say. I made so many personal sacrifices for this job.

I dedicated many late nights and weekends to working in and on the business.

I poured all my energy into building this up to a fully integrated marketing

agency that managed both online and offline communication elements

in a flexible and creative environment. I loved it – I was living my dream

and worked on so many interesting accounts and projects.

But this was not enough.

After twelve months I looked at my income and decided I could be doing

better. I was thinking about what I would do and then a great friend of mine

told me to read a book called The One Minute Millionaire.

This changed my life.

Everything changed.

I had a new lease on life and a whole new vision about what I wanted to do.

After more than a year working in the advertising agency, I decided to hand in

my letter of resignation as a full time employee.

I have now shifted my role to become an external

consultant working on contract to the business.

I am now in the process of building one million dollars

worth of tangible assets in one year.

I decided to set this goal at the end of May 2007.

For me it’s not about becoming a millionaire – it’s about sharing the

experience with others and making a difference.

It is more about motivating others than it is about myself.

They say the journey of 1000 miles starts with the first step.

If you have a journey ahead and are hesitating,

don’t look at the 1000 steps, focus on that first one.

DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!

Nothing comes to those who wait.

Josh.
